Death of a Samurai は、２００４年イギリスのエジンバラ演劇祭に参加したのが初演です。 当時の地元紙で最高五つ星という好評を得た作品です。その劇評のほんの一部をご紹介します！ fest Death of a Samurai (☆☆☆☆☆), a wierd manga-style pop idol show, is just so superbly brilliant that it instantly transcends any cultural barriers. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Death of a Samuraiはマンガから抜け出して来た様なポップアイドルが繰り広げる エキサイティングなショーである。 とにかく素晴らしく、どんな文化の壁も瞬時に超越してゆく。 Counter   Culture There are language difficulties with this performance as much is in Japanese. Yet this is overcome by the enthusiasm and obvious talent of the cast and crew. A thumping Japanese pop soundtrack and physical theatre which looks like something out of anime or Manga. The costumes are great and the dance and fight scenes lively. The cast are obviously enjoying themselves and this feeling communicates where language fails. It is impossible not to like them and be attracted by their sheer energy. At one point the cast hold-up banners in English to prompt us on the plot! Afro13 are established in Japan and looking to do more work overseas. I think that if they find partners to collaborate with in areas like translation they will have a bright future indeed. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 観劇の際、日本語と英語という言葉の壁がある。がしかし彼らのパフォーマンスには熱意とキャスト、スタッフの類い稀な才能によってその壁を超越するものが感じられる。大音量のジャパニーズポップとその身体表現はアニメやマンガから抜け出てきた様である。衣装が素晴らしく、戦闘のシーンは息を飲むばかりである。キャスト自身がパフォーマンスを楽しんでいて言葉の違いなどものともせず、自らの感覚で客席とコミニュケーションをしている（我々が読めるのは劇中キャストが持ち上げた垂れ幕に映る英語表記のあらすじだけなのだ！）。彼らのすさまじいエネルギーを前にして魅力を感じないことなど不可能である。Afro13は海外での上演を望む日本のカンパニーである。もし彼らが翻訳劇を望む場所、またはパートナーを見つけることができれば輝ける未来が待っているだろう。 レビュー　by パット　ハリントン Your Voice This was one of the best things we have seen at the Fringe this year (and believe me, we have seen a lot!). Unfortunately the visibility is some of the poorest we've experienced  - but that's not the fault of the performers so 5 anyway. Just be sure and get there early so you can sit in the front. As for the show, it's worth it for the costumes alone, but the music, choreography and performances are all excellent. Although it never really resolves into a truly coherent story, it is all strangely moving and thoroughly enjoyable. Probably won;t make it back this year, but if Afro 13 are back next year theirs will be one of the first shows I book! //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 「好きじゃないとは言わせない」このショーは私にとって今年のエジンバラフェスティバル・フリンジの中で一、二を争うステージだった（信じて欲しいのはこれ以外にも私は本当に沢山のステージを観た）。不幸にもぱっと見では今まで見た中でもっとも貧相なステージだった（これは演じる5人のパフォーマーのせいではない）。けれどとにかく早めに会場に行ってかぶり付きで見てもらいたい。内容に関して言うと、まず衣装だけでも見る価値がある。加えて使用されてる音楽、振り付け、パフォーマンス全てが素晴らしい！残念ながらストーリーの細かいところまでは理解できなかったが、不思議と感動的で充分に楽しめる。恐らく今年はもうこっちで公演することはないんだろうが、もし、来年Afro13が戻ってきたら、私はまず最初にAfro13のチケットを予約する。 レビュー　by　ジュディー（一般のお客様、観劇レビュー）＠エジンバラ Forth one Death of a Samurai is a brilliantly choreographed, fast paced and moving dance performance based on the idea of forbidden and dangerous love. 　 The plot sees a young girl with the ability to give immortality through a kiss , but only once , for when she kisses she will die. Throughout the hour and ten minute performance she is ensued by assassins , warriors , madmen and fosterwerewolf father resulting in a hilarious and exciting combination of theatre and dance. The cast performed the fight and dance scenes with effortless grace , employing the ancient Japanese technique of special effects with impressive results and seamlessly moving from scene to scene accompanied by a upbeat modern soundtrack.All in all the performance was a fantastic piece of work from start to finish. Everyone in the audience left with a smile on thier faces and plenty of praises. A definite must see show for all ages and persuasions. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Death of a Samuraiは秘められた危険なラブストーリーを基にし、素晴らしく振り付けされたテンポの早いのダンスパフォーマンスだ。あらすじによると主人公の少女はキスするものに不老不死の力を与える不思議な力を持っていた。しかしそれは一度きり。ひとたびキスをしてしまうと彼女は死んでしまう。1時間10分のパフォーマンスで彼女に続いて殺し屋、戦士、狂人、彼女の父親代わりである狼男が登場し、その絶妙なコンビネーションで愉快でエキサイティングな芝居とダンスをみせてくれる。キャストは戦闘とダンスのシーンをさりげない優雅さをもって演じ、古代日本の特殊効果を用いて印象的なシーンが作り上げられ、アップビートのモダンな音楽とともにシーンからシーンへ途切れなく移行してゆく。始めから終わりまで全てのパフォーマンスが素晴らしく、観るものすべてが微笑みを浮かべ、称賛を惜しまなかった。これは全ての年代、人種が観るべきステージであることは間違いない。 The Scotsman Second up is Death of a Samurai, a slightly bonkers Kill Bill-style samurai adventure performed by a harum scarum bunch of young performers to Japanese pop music. The costumes are fantastic Manga-esque creations and the cast helpfully hold up placards to explain what is going on. Thus we understand that we are in a forest, with a samurai, a ninja, a werewolf, a girl with magic healing powers and a boy with a third eye in the middle of his forehead. It’s somewhere between a cartoon and kung fu movie with the cast flying on and off the stage, charging into high energy fight sequences and learning magic powers. The choreography is pretty ropey, but it is cute and funny and more or less possible to follow what is supposed to be going on. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Death of a Samurai---ジャパニーズポップにのせた、はちゃめちゃな若いパフォーマーによる狂気のキル・ビル・スタイル、サムライ活劇といったところか。衣装はマンガ風の素晴らしい創作である。幸いなことにキャストが劇中であらすじをプラカード等で示してくれる。それによって劇中は森の中で、そこにはサムライ、ニンジャ、狼男、癒しの魔力を持つ少女、額の中央に第三の眼をもつ少年がいることがわかる。カートウ―ンとカンフー映画をミックスさせたようなつくりで、キャストはステージを飛び回っている。戦闘シーンと魔法のシーンに重点が置かれている。振り付けはかなり粗削りだが、キュートで滑稽だ。すくなくとも何が起こっているか理解することが出来る。 レビュー　by　クレアー　スミス The Stage Online The Stage OnlineJapan Experience- Death of a SamuraiThere is never a dull moment as the youthful multi-talented Afro 13 Company of Japan hurl themselves around the stage with disciplined abandon, in this surreal comic-strip pop music piece of intensely physical theatre. Author-director Tomohiro Sasaki and all the high-energy cast win high praise for a fast-moving, appealingly weird entertainment, enchanced by Eri Mastuoka’s zany costumes from Kinoko’s mini sailor-suit with Kimono wrap to Izuna’s Kawakubo collage. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// そこには退屈な瞬間などなく、若く才能にあふれた日本のカンパニー、Afro13の訓練された奔放さがステージを満たしている。演出家佐々木　智広とエネルギッシュなキャストはそのポップミュージックにのせた身体表現、類い稀な娯楽性において観客の多くの称賛を勝ち取った。そしてこのパフォーマンスをより華々しくしているのはキノコのミニスカートのセーラー服や川久保　玲のコラージュを思わせるイズナの着物のコスチュームなどをつくった松岡　絵理だ。 レビュー　by　ブライアン・G・クーパー ThreeWeeks-physical theatre review Death of a SamuraiJapan Experience is a marvel to behold. I judge books by their covers, and never, ever would I go to see a show entitled 'Death of a Samurai' unless my ticket was already paid for. So, with a gem like this, being a reviewer is brilliant. The show can be described as a cross between a computer arcade and an erratic game of kiss-chase, with the most fantastical, completely random costumes. I'm not sure it would have made any more sense if I actually understood Japanese but who cares when there is this much fun to be had? I won't give away the ending, but rest assured the body-count exceeds the total number of actors. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Japan Experienceには驚ろかされる。パンフレットの表紙を見ただけでは御招待のチケットでない限り私は「Death of a Samurai」と題されたショーを観に行くことはなかっただろう。だから今回のようにレビューアーになれるのは誠に嬉しいかぎりだ。このショーを言い表すとすれば、ゲームセンターから抜け出た素晴らしくかつ完全にランダムな衣装を身にまとった登場人物の、キスを巡って争う狂気のゲームといったところか。私は日本語がわかるが、もしそこに言葉すら超越した娯楽があったら誰が言葉の違いを問題にするだろうか？私はこれ以上の劇的感覚を覚えたことがない。ストーリーのエンディングは言えないが、一人だけ死者を乗り越え立っている者がいるとだけ言っておこう。
